Meet Sean Bowers of San Diego Sockers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Bowers.

Sean holds a diverse athletic background and his playing experience is as vast as his time as a coach. He retired as a member of the San Diego Sockers in 2009-10 with the PASL as well as in 2005 with the MASL. He is the only person in NPSL/MISL history to achieve at least 1000 blocks and 1000 points. He was a 2002/2003 MISL All-Star and the league’s Defender of the Year with the Baltimore Blast. He was a 3-time Defender of the Year in the MISL. He played for the Kansas City Wizards from 1996-99 in the MLS, and earned the team’s Defender of the Year award twice. He also served as Wizards’ team captain for the 1999 season. He has also been a member of the U.S. National Futsal Team since 1995, earning 36 international caps. He has been the team’s captain 1998-2004.

The team won the 2004 CONCACAF gold medal and played in the 2004 World Cup in Taiwan. He also saw time with the Detroit Rockers of the NPSL from 1991-95 and 2000-01; he was the league’s Rookie of the Year as the Rockers won the 1991 NPSL championship. He was a four-time NPSL All-Star and three-time Defender of the Year.

To honor his play at Quincy College (Ill.), he was inducted into the college’s Soccer Hall of Fame, in 2007.

Sean has been the head women’s soccer coach at Miramar since its inception in 2007. Under his leadership the women’s soccer program at Miramar College had a record of 146-32-17 and some of the women’s soccer accomplishments include 5 PCAC Championships, 2 sweet sixteens and 3 elite eights.

He also is President and owner of 619futsal. In 2011, he started 619futsal to help create futsal league for San Diego youth soccer players to learn and understand the benefits of futsal. The purpose of 619futsal is to help create a futsal league to help develop our youth soccer players in San Diego. 619futsal leagues develop over 2000 players annually through leagues, camps and clinics.

He became General Manager of the SD Sockers Aug, 2016. Under Sean’s leadership, the 2016-2017 Sockers finished 1 game away from making the MASL finals, attendance went up 31% and has solidified the front office staff in hiring new and energetic people.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Taking over as General Manager of the Sockers, there have been many challenges. The top three should be increasing attendance, staying relevant within the community and continuing the championship culture of the 14-time World Champions San Diego Sockers.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about San Diego Sockers – what should we know?
The proudest franchise in the sport of indoor soccer, the San Diego Sockers returned to action in 2009 with the PASL after a five-year hiatus thanks to the leadership and inspiration of local businessmen David Pike, Carl Savoia, and Phil Salvagio. It was one thing to bring back the Sockers name, but these men knew the real work would be in restoring the Sockers’ dynastic domination of the sport. Salvagio, a former Sockers goalie, and the team’s Head Coach, carefully crafted a combination of rising young talent and the veteran leadership to guide and train the team.

The San Diego Sockers are the most successful indoor soccer team in the sport’s history. The team has won a total of 14 indoor championships in the MISL, PASL and MASL leagues combined. Also, the Sockers also set a U.S. pro sports record with the longest winning streak boasting 48 straight wins.

Championships:

NASL Indoor: 1981, 1983
MISL: 1982, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991
PASL: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
There are three that I constantly tell people you must have:

Hard work- must be willing to do every single job no matter what it is. Demand excellence of yourself first.

Compassion- lead with the heart but don’t be afraid to make hard decisions. and when you do show people you care.

Empowerment- everyone that works with you must feel they are part of a bigger picture and this includes a leader having the ability to listen, trust and back all of the woem-loees that work with you.
