Rising Stars: Meet Tara Gasparian of South Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Gasparian.

Tara Gasparian

Hi Tara, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Like so many, I started making jewelry to give as gifts and it took off from there! I’ve always had creative jobs, and this seemed like a natural progression.
I originally focused on vintage and antique pieces from Europe and Mexico, but when sourcing for the cool and unusual became trickier, and the look I was doing became more popular, I veered more towards folk art and pieces handmade in Nepal and Tibet to round out my collections
Ive always had a pretty consistent style, so it was fun to see it re-imagined in many different manifestations in collaboration with artists across the Globe

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think self employment is ever a smooth road! There are so many reasons to be grateful to work in a creative setting with only myself to answer to, but the voices in your head can definitely mess with you! I worked relentlessly the first 10 years and the burn out was intense, but I have worked hard to create a balance. Its a challenge for sure, but I’m much better at it than in the beginning

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I design jewlery utilizing vintage and antique pieces, unique finds from across the globe, found objects, and I also incorporate custom bronze charms and medals . I’m most of the proud of the fact that I’m still in the game 20 plus years later and that I touch every single piece that is created.
I have so many great relationships with buyers from women run boutiques all over the country, as well as a great following here in San Diego!
I am constantly evolving my style, but never abandoning it. And I have a look that people recognize as mine, and that thrills me to no end!

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up in Laguna Beach California, the daughter of two artists, so I had exposure to art and culture from a very early age. My parents collected folk art and antiques and vintage cars and I see a lot of that sensibility in my own work Growing up I was pretty free range and roamed the streets barefoot, maybe with a skateboard or bike, and just enjoyed the beautiful surroundings I was privileged enough to experience .
