What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?

Every industry has its myths—stories insiders repeat until they sound like truth. But behind the slogans and the spin are unspoken (and sometimes unnoticed) realities – we asked some of the wisest folks we know to share what lies they’ve noticed in their industries.

That women’s pain is normal. That it’s okay to hand us painkillers and birth control and send us on our way. That a system that profits from our suffering is somehow helping us. Our creative industry often tells us that theres no more room, that there isn’t enough business to go around. I sometimes buy into the lie, but then I keep meeting people who are building new businesses and pursuing their dreams every day – and it reminds me that all of those businesses need creative strategy and content. One of the biggest lies my industry tells itself is that there’s enough room at the table for everyone to eat. That sounds nice, but it’s not always true. The reality is that some of us will have to go and build our own tables. Every industry has gatekeepers, including the Branding + Creative industry.
