Meet Angelana Marie, Hanah Salas, and Irene Zepeda of Brujitxs Del Barrio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelana Marie, Hanah Salas, and Zepeda.

Angelana, Hanah, and Irene, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The universe and our higher selves have been working behind the scenes for Angelana, Hanah, and Irene to come together to build a magical healing space. Hanah and Angelana met through a mutual friend at an event that Hanah put together at The Brown Building in City Heights, and Irene and Angelana met at an event at Writerz Blok.

Angelana had been manifesting a healing collective for over six years, trusting that the process will manifest when the timing was right. One day Irene called Angelana to rent a little studio together and thought to get one more person would be ideal, and Hanah immediately came to Angelana’s mind. Angelana introduced the two, with Hanah’s three magical children in tow playing at Chicano Park.

We fell in love with the little space and Hanah immediately interjected that everything we sell has to be at a sliding scale and without hesitation, we all agreed! With our three different backgrounds and the stories we carry along with the medicines we make, we made the space what it is becoming today. Brujitxs is it’s own force, needing to come into existence, growing to become something bigger than any of us imagined. Brujitxs does not belong to us we are just the facilitators of the space.

What makes it even more magical is both Hanah and Irene have roots in Barrio Logan. Irene grew up here, and the very exact space we’re at is the exact space that Hanah’s father used to work at 30 years ago. With all of the gentrification and systematic oppression happening in the neighborhood and everywhere, we wanted a space that was for and by people of color, who are affected by the intersections of oppression.

Has it been a smooth road?
Actually, it has been a pretty smooth road! We have worked together so well as a collective we each bring our own special talents and fill in the gaps and the community has received as with full love!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
This is our mission statement:

In addition, we will be donating a portion of our sales back to the community. As a collective of womxn of color with multiple intersections, we believe In our magic and can’t wait to share it with you.”

✔️We are creating a sustainable community by offering goods and services at sliding scale prices and employing local Healers.

✔️We put our money back into the community by donating a percentage of our earnings, spending our own earnings at local shops, and providing free necessary supplies and food to those in need.

✔️We provide a safe and healing space for all and especially Brown, Black, Queer, and other marginalized

✔️We connect and empower the community with resources, services, information and offer our time and love to those in need.

✔️We are committed to help bring awareness and fight all forms of discrimination that runs in all communities but especially in our Latinx communities being that we’re Latinx ourselves. Specifically anti blackness, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, ableism, misogyny and also colonization, gentrification, white supremacy and the patriarchy.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
We don’t necessarily operate as a business. We are trying to become a non-profit. We’re a healing space that wants to make holistic lifestyles and healing affordable and not just for those who are financially comfortable.

When you come into our space, there is no pressure to buy anything because self-care does not require you to buy anything. You may walk into our space to decompress, take and leave a little bit of good energy home with you. We sincerely work hard to navigate outside of a capitalistic mentality.

It would be wonderful if there wasn’t such a huge wealth gap so we could have more places that were sliding scale and for healing but due to greed and the massive wage gap, it makes it near impossible for anyone to start their own businesses, which is why collective spaces are the way to go now.
