Today we’d like to introduce you to Calen Fields.
Hi Calen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always loved music from the earliest days of my life. Nobody in my family played any instruments when I was growing up, but I always knew I was extremely eager and curious to learn how. I eventually asked my parents if I could learn how to play piano, and they have supported my music journey ever since. My introduction to electronic music happened when I lived overseas (military family, Navy) in Germany. They had a techno station on the radio we used to listen to while driving. I was also fortunate enough to be there when UK Dubstep started to get popular and Skrillex not long after. Just like when I wanted to learn the piano, from the first time I heard electronic music, I knew that it was something that resonated deep within me and that I wanted to learn how to make. The way the synthesizers sounded, the way beats and melodies moved so perfectly & calculated with each other, it felt exciting to listen to. On the other end of the spectrum; I also grew up watching sci-fi and always loved the retro-analog synth sound (blade runner most famously) and sound design tricks they used to make the movies come more alive. Even though I draw my roots and inspiration from all over the place, I currently make what I would call Cinematic Bass music or storytelling music. I don’t always stick to one sound or genre; I like to explore whatever is making me tick at the time. I like to ‘paint pictures’ and tell stories through sound & music, oftentimes not using many words or lyrics. My goal is to introduce people to new ideas, perspectives, styles of music, and instruments from around the world. Overall, my goal is to spread positive energy and make the world a more beautiful place.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If the road was smooth, then it probably wouldn’t be worth walking on! Honestly, the biggest obstacle to my career an artist is time & money. I went to college for 5 years and got a degree in mechanical engineering (along with nice student loans). I have had to work full-time, like many of us, since leaving college to keep me afloat while still supporting my hobby/dreams. I am fortunate enough to have made it this far, but now I still have a long path ahead of me on my journey to success. Currently, my life is a non-stop balancing act between long hours of work (construction) and having time to unwind and get in the proper headspace and create. And sometimes it’s better not to, and just rest & recover and take on the next day. It’s easy to get burnt out between having 2 careers essentially, but at the end of the day, it’s extremely rewarding, and the journey has only made me a better person and artist as a result.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make music, specifically electronic music. I am proud that I have gotten to share the stage and collaborate with so many other amazing artists, as well as travel across the country to play shows/events. What sets me apart from others is: I try to curate a unique experience, with exotic styles of music that just hits differently than what most people are used to. Outside-the-box music if you will. I try to create an experience that involves as many of the senses (sight, sound, smell, feel) possible so that it has a long-lasting impact. And of course, I always bring good vibes as my musical movement is all about (human) connection and making the world a more beautiful, loving place.
We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.
While I may be impulsive at times, I’m a very calculated person. I typically don’t take risks unless I absolutely have to, and I always make sure not to over-extend myself. My goal is to have a healthy, long-lasting career, and the best way to do that is on a solid foundation.
