Meet Laura Bravo Mertz of Solifoto

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Bravo Mertz.

Laura, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Solifoto 10 years ago once I decided to sell my sign business and dedicate myself fully to photography. About 20 or so years ago, 450 pounds ago, 2 kids ago, I was a glamour model, nothing fancy, mostly bikini shoots and calendars. I learned so much about posing, how to make the human body look longer, leaner and basically how to move in front of the camera.

I took my experience and passion for glamour photography into making women look and feel beautiful and decided to pursue this dream of bringing gorgeous, magazine quality pics to every woman of every age.

The catalyst in this was my Mother in law buying me a fancy camera at Christmastime in 2006, and I’ve been obsessed ever since. Taking every seminar, going to every photo clinic, spending endless nights teaching myself Photoshop and Lightroom. I started with shooting my girlfriends and soon their friends and so on! I got into editorial work at about 2014 and I bring my editorial experience to every lady coming to me for a beautiful portrait. The editorial work helped bring more ladies to me along with exposure in the US, Europe and South America.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, in the first 4-5 years, I was excited and ready to shoot everything that I overexerted myself and I overworked myself into a mini nervous breakdown. I now have Debbie; my event coordinator limits the amount of shoots that I take on in a week. That keeps me loving what I do and the stress at a level I can deal with.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Solifoto – what should we know?
Solifoto specializes in making women feel and look beautiful, glamorous and giving them a dream shoot with portraits that they will be proud to display, or give to a loved one. I’m primarily known for Boudoir Portraiture, but I also shoot Fashion Photography and Business Identity shoots. I believe I give every person in front of me an editorial flair to their images. I love to make people feel at ease and that my goal is identical to theirs, that is, to get drop dead gorgeous images of them!

I believe what sets me apart is that I personally position their bodies to their advantage and I light them beautifully so that there’s little photoshop needed. I’m constantly mirroring them and I’m also doing every position with them. That helps breaks the ice! Having a professional hair and makeup artist on set also helps.

I’m proud that the majority of ladies that we shoot are over 40, have kids, and can still look crazy beautiful. In fact, I just shot a sexy 70-year-old grandmother that wanted a Boudoir experience for herself, not her husband! I live for these moments!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Loving what I do. I’m crazy about Boudoir and making women feel like Goddesses, it feeds me spiritually and I feel so lucky to have this company that I adore! Having the most amazing team, second photographer Catherine Hatfield, Hair and Makeup artist Cristiam Wilhelmy, my event director Debbie Gutierrez make my job easy by bringing their excellence every day.
