Meet Merima Helic of Studio Merima Photography in Carlsbad

Today we’d like to introduce you to Merima Helic.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Merima. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Fifteen years ago, if someone had asked me if I would be working as a photographer today, I probably would’ve laughed! In fact, I studied Biochemistry in college and intended to go into healthcare for a career. Talk about an about-face! But, art in its many forms was always something that called to me. From music and songwriting to painting and drawing – I loved the creativity of it and being able to bring ideas to life. In retrospect, it really isn’t much of a surprise that I ultimately found myself in love with photography. It all started with travel photography about 12 years ago, before I took a leap of faith with portrait photography about 8 years ago. This is when Studio Merima Photography came to be and I’ve been chasing light ever since. Life works in funny ways and through incredible luck and circumstance, I found myself in San Diego doing something that I truly love.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being able to work for myself has been incredible, but it’s not for the faint of heart. Like most people chasing a dream, I’ve found that the reality is always quite a bit different than what was imagined. There are certainly struggles: the fluctuations between the busy and off seasons, creative ruts, wearing too many hats, etc. Having said that, I wouldn’t change it for the world – I’ve met so many amazing people, traveled the country, and had experiences I never would’ve imagined.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Studio Merima Photography – what should we know?
Studio Merima Photography specializes in portraits and weddings, always aspiring to capture genuine moments of real people – a cross section of their lives at that moment. I love featuring a mix of classic film-like images, B&W, and fine-art to bring out what is special and individual to every story. Creating those images and telling stories inspires me to keep imagining,
and really go out of the way to do better than the last frame. That’s why I work with every client individually to determine the ideal conditions for the best experience. From there, it’s a matter of running with it and having fun – you should see what I’m willing to try to get a 2-year-old to laugh and smile!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
That’s an easy one – my family and especially my husband. They have been incredibly supportive through all the highs and lows. I’m unbelievably lucky and grateful for their unwavering belief in me, even when I’ve had doubts myself. Any success I’ve had is also their success. No question about it. Beyond that, I would be nowhere without the trust and faith of all my past, current, and future clients! I can’t thank them enough – they’re seriously amazing.
