Today we’d like to introduce you to Sergio Santamaria.
Sergio, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in a talented family. As far back as I could remember I loved watching a film. My dad showing me lots of actions and comedy, my mom showing the animated side, and my grandma showing me horror. While I watched movies my parents would have music playing louder than the tv. Funny thing is I started creating in a different form of art…drawing. From drawing grew an impatient youngster who wanted to create something a lot quicker than a drawing, but still gives me the satisfaction of expressing myself to the fullest.
My Dad gifted me a keyboard one year for Christmas… I was 12 at the time…and from there I started making music. Every free second I had I would learn a new song on the keyboard to play or compose my own piece. Jumping into my freshman year of college I grew a big interest in photography. This interest didn’t last too long once I started to use the record function on my camera instead of the shutter button.
All through my freshman and sophomore year of college, I grew a huge passion for creating film. It was second nature to me, same as creating music. To be able to tell a story the way you wanted it to be told with also needing to be more creative visually video after video just blew my mind. So from college, I started to work in low-voltage and just recently fully dedicated myself to my passion. Proudly able to say I am a videographer.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have grown up with depression and anxiety. I have a loving family who is fully supportive of every decision I make in my life. Even thru all of the support I have felt extremely alone and lost. As a child, I was a happy and very outgoing kid. Shy at first as many but that faded quickly. Rolling into my teens I went through a lot of emotions I couldn’t put my finger on. Crying my eyes out in the restroom in the middle of classes and in my own home. Never speaking to anyone about what I was going thru for the fear of being judged.
I truly felt alone in my pain growing up but now as an adult, I see the world and everyone going through similar obstacles in life. Till this day I continue to deal with my mental health but have become stronger and proud of my growth. My portfolio, clientele, and podcast now all have some sort of connection to speak on mental health and that’s one of the big reasons why I continue to create.
Tell us more about your work.
I have such a passion for film and because of that, I have a big taste of indie cinema in my work. When it comes to my personal work I put in so much of myself into it I always get feedback that it looks so much like a “documentary film”. When it comes to a small business or big i go ahead and take a more professional tone and collaborate with the client and see where the content needs to go to best fit the business.
I guess what I’m known for is the return on the content. Usually, same day to a day for the client to receive their video. With this being my main job that’s a perk for the client. Fully focused on getting the work done. I would love to be known as the guy with such emotion in his shots and films. The guy who always talks about mental health.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I hope to be a staple in the videography scene and can collaborate and help other up and coming content creators understand the field and be able to grow their own business as well. I never saw myself as a big business…I’m just a guy with a big love for creating and an even bigger love for seeing content with passion being spread to inspire other creators.
