Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Konrad
Hi Christopher, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After years of working in the fast-paced world of technology, I’m preparing for a change. I want my next career to let me connect with nature and get my hands dirty.
Being in Southern California, I’ve always had a love for landscaping and gardening. And as it turns out, I have a knack for growing agave plants—they seem to thrive under my care.
With this passion and skill, I’ve embarked on a new adventure: starting my own agave growing business. It’s been a rewarding experience, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Finding the perfect plot of land for growing agaves in California has been quite the adventure. We’ve had to consider everything from weather and zoning to water availability and soil quality. And let’s not forget about the cost and whether there’s a good bar nearby (because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a post-work drink?).
Another big question has been whether to dive headfirst into this business or keep it as a side hustle. With no clear market established, it was a tough call. For now, I’ve decided to keep my day job and grow this agave venture on the side.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about San Diego Agave?
Imagine transforming your ordinary backyard into a lush, exotic oasis. That’s exactly what I did back in 2010, starting with just a few agave plants. Now, I’m dreaming big: thousands of these unique and beautiful plants.
My love for agaves has only grown deeper over the years, fueled by its rich history and the exciting potential it holds for the future. At San Diego Agave, we’re turning this passion into a mission: to provide distillers with the finest, organically grown agaves for crafting exceptional spirits.
By 2030, we aim to offer a diverse selection of 20 agave species, all cultivated using sustainable practices right here in San Diego County. Our goal is to not only produce amazing agaves but also to promote biodiversity and improve soil health through innovative farming methods.
We’re still in the early stages of this journey, eager to learn and grow alongside other agave enthusiasts. As members of the California Agave Council, we’re actively working to shape this emerging market and contribute to a more sustainable future.
What matters most to you? Why?
What truly matters to me is leaving the Earth in better shape than I found it. I believe that addressing environmental challenges should be a rewarding and fulfilling experience, bringing joy and a sense of accomplishment.
