Today we’d like to introduce you to Meg Fink.
Meg, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I originally grew up in the countryside of a quaint little state named Iowa. As a young girl, I knew I wanted to see what was beyond the cornfields and towering trees I had been surrounded by my entire life. After graduating high school, I stuffed my life belongings in two bags and embarked on a journey from my small town of 20,000 to a bustling city in Southern California to attend school. After completing four years of college, I graduated from my University with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, an excitement for the future, and a complete lack of direction. I soon began to work a variety of typical post-graduate jobs that left me wanting more from life and the world around me. I soon began to pursue my dreams to travel and quickly secured a job as a Flight Attendant with a semi-private Jet company which is where my love for traveling and exploring other countries and cultures took off (pun intended). Since becoming a Flight Attendant, I have had the privilege of white water rafting next to the Amazon Forest in Ecuador, relaxing on the white sand beaches of Tulum, eating loads of barbecue sauce and ribs in Texas, surviving an earthquake in Bali, and enduring adventures both big and small in between.
While traveling has been instrumental in fulfilling my wanderlust nature, I felt something missing in my creative outlet. To satiate my hunger for creativity, I began to pursue my longtime passion for modeling and started working with freelance photographers in the LA area. My love for modeling steadily increased with every photoshoot I did and led me to the decision to take a road trip through the midwest with the purpose of working with photographers from Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, and Michigan. This trip allowed me to combine my passion for traveling and modeling into one which was a lifelong dream come true for me. While I still have many goals, I would like to accomplish with my modeling career, I am grateful for the opportunities and people I have encountered along the way and hope to always explore new places, discover more of myself, and inspire others through the power of photos.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Making the decision to pursue both traveling and modeling was not easy. I was raised in an intellectual and practical family that taught me to find a career in order to “make a living” instead of creating ways to “live through making.” Overcoming the mindset that you have to follow a pattern that is set by societal norms or family trends was the most challenging part of pursuing what I truly wanted as a career. It was these thoughts, presumptions, and fears that I had to push through to gain the motivation and confidence I needed to start traveling more frequently and reaching out to photographers to begin my journey as a model. If I could give any word of advice, it would be to actively challenge your fears and doubts so that you are able to do what truly sets your soul on fire and gives you purpose, happiness, and meaning every day.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am currently a “professional” traveler and aspiring model. I fell in love with both of these things as a young girl and was inspired as an adult to continue to do what I love to continue to learn, grow, and inspire others. I enjoy giving travel tips to those who are beginning their journey and share my same love for travel. As for modeling, I am beginning to work with people all over the map to build my portfolio and continue to gain experience in order to grow and thrive in this field.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
The most important piece of advice I would give to a young woman starting her career is to JUST START. It can be overwhelming to think of where you want to be and all the steps that are required in between, but when you start putting the work in, you slowly gain more motivation as you see the fruits of your labor through small wins along the journey. I would also advise to do what truly lights you up and makes you more able to love yourself and those around you to the fullest. Since I was a little girl I had a deep love for being both in front of and behind the camera. However, it was very difficult for me to seriously pursue modeling because I was so scared of others’ opinions. At the end of the day, people’s negative opinions don’t hurt as much as living with broken dreams simply because of fear. If you love it, do it.
