Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Gregory.
Rachel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a city girl, born and raised in Manhattan, NY. I grew up playing sports, refusing to wear dresses (sorry Mom), and thinking that I was going to be the first woman in the NBA. I grew up in a pretty health-conscious household and although I was by no means ‘overweight,’ I definitely spent many years going through chubby-skinny-chubby phases and suffered from a ton of ‘yo-yo’ dieting throughout middle-school, high-school, and definitely college.
After suffering from a bad ankle injury during my junior year of high school, I had to put that NBA dream on hold. Instead of being an athlete, I figured the next best thing would be treating the athletes. So, I went to college to pursue a degree in Sports Medicine from the University of Miami. Fast forward a few years… loved my school, my teachers, the athletes I worked with but started to develop a new passion for the field of nutrition.
I decided to pursue this ‘new passion,’ and went on to get my Master’s degree in Nutrition & Exercise Physiology from James Madison University which is where I discovered the ketogenic diet. I became obsessed with learning everything I could about this diet protocol and ended up completing the first-ever human clinical study looking at the fat loss and body re-composition effects of a ketogenic diet in non-elite CrossFit athletes.
The study was a huge success and it’s what really propelled me into furthering my knowledge on the ketogenic diet and adopting the lifestyle for myself. I wrote a best-selling book, 21-Day Ketogenic Diet Weight Loss Challenge, and now have my own online nutrition and wellness business where I focus on helping my clients become lean, strong, and confident while optimizing all aspects of their physical and mental well-being.
Has it been a smooth road?
I honestly don’t think there is such a thing as a ‘smooth road’ for anyone looking to build their own business. There are always going to be ups and downs, successes and failures – it’s just part of being an entrepreneur. With every struggle and failure, there is always a lesson to be learned and I’ve seen that many times so far within my own business.
My best advice would be to ALWAYS be as authentic as possible when building your brand or business. You must practice what you preach. People can see right through you if you’re not being yourself and they won’t stick around for the long haul. Authenticity and providing your audience with true value and genuine, real-life experience is a must if you want to impact as many lives as possible and grow your business long-term.
I also believe it is important to ‘give more than you take.’ You want to build a meaningful relationship with your audience and you must treat people like people, NOT like numbers or sales. Be real and transparent, overdeliver, provide massive value, and always be willing to learn and grow with your audience.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I’m a Board Certified Nutritionist, Athletic Trainer, and Strength and Conditioning Specialist. I aim to inspire and instruct others on how to improve their lives and achieve their goals through proper education, awareness, and accountability as it relates to all aspects of nutrition and fitness. I don’t tell my clients what to do. I teach them HOW to do it and WHY they are doing it so that they can understand and sustain their results long-term.
The majority of my clients are women (with a few males sprinkled in the mix) and I help them transform their lives by starting with the physical (body), realizing the power of the mental (mindset), and ultimately gaining massive confidence that bleeds into every aspect of their lives (family, relationships, work, etc.).
I pride myself in practicing what I preach and never being dogmatic about my views. I believe that in the nutrition and fitness world, it’s important to be open-minded and continue to learn each and every day. I also believe you should always educate rather than dictate if you truly want your clients to change and sustain their progress long-term.
My motto is: ‘Change your body, change your mind, change your confidence, change your life.’
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I believe all women have the potential to thrive in any and all endeavors. This is no longer a male-dominated world and I think everyone is beginning to realize that. Go after what you want, work hard for it, and never let anyone tell you it’s not possible. Anything is possible as long as you have the drive and will to work for it.
