Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Metz.
Valerie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My shop got started when my mom traveled with me to Peru every year since I was a toddler. We collected fabrics as souvenirs and I loved being able to wear my culture in my american world. My mom brought baby clothes for my son along with some home decor last summer when she went and everyone had asked me where his clothes were from since they are uniquely and ethically made. I decided to start this shop for other families to start collecting as heirlooms, especially at a time where people are passionate about handmade clothes
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been somewhat smooth, definitely lots of learning curves along the way. There are lots of small factors that come into opening an online shop that seemed overwhelming at first but it’s all a learning experience and an adjustment. The best advice I can share is to network like crazy, ask for help, use your sources! I had so much anxiety going into this that could’ve stopped me but I reached to successful shop owners that were able to mentor me in a way. I would also say to give yourself time and grace! Most success comes through patience and experience so going through the hardships allows so much growth
what should we know about Llama Folk? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I own two business – I’m a full-time wedding and lifestyle photographer and I just launched my online shop, Llama Folk, a few weeks ago! Overall, I specialize in photos that really help shape my brand. I love golden tones, sandy colors, nude palettes and so having the eye for creativity in photography is a huge advantage. Aside from that, I feel like what sets me apart from other shops is the “Peruvian look” which I feel like is very trendy in cultures such as linen clothing, folky/authentic style, and neutral colors. Most baby clothing is bright, loud colors so it’s refreshing and calming for me to choose a unique but simple, everyday look for little ones
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Give yourself grace! It’s easy for social media to make things seem very successful and quick but truth is, everyone’s constantly growing and learning. Connecting with other entrepreneurs who have been in it for a while helps a ton! Most business owners I’ve met have been super open about their challenges and experience. Networking is always key, with the right motives!
