Hi Kanpitcha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Thank you so much for the opportunity. My name is Kanpitcha Promthong, or you can Call me Irene and I’m the founder of The Grand Dara Thai Massage in Pacific Beach, San Diego. This business is very close to my heart — not just because of my passion for Thai massage, but because of the journey it took to get here.
I feel truly lucky. This dream became reality thanks to the help and encouragement of my husband, Minthira Senabut, and our close friends who supported us every step of the way. Their belief in me and in our shared vision gave me the strength to build this space.
With over 15 years of experience in the Thai massage industry, I’ve seen how powerful this healing art can be. That’s why we created The Grand Dara — to elevate the experience of Thai massage. We’ve carefully designed every aspect of the shop — from the atmosphere, the decor, to the quality of service — to feel more premium, peaceful, and luxurious, while staying true to the heart of Thai tradition.
The name The Grand Dara comes from two inspirations — “Grand” from Grand Avenue, the street where our shop is located, and “Dara” means “star” in Thai, and our hope is that everyone who visits us will feel special and leave shining a little brighter.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening The Grand Dara Thai Massage was far from easy. One of the biggest challenges was finding the right location — somewhere with good energy, convenient access, and a welcoming neighborhood. It took us quite a while to find a place that truly felt like home.
Then came construction delays — we faced unexpected setbacks and a longer-than-expected build-out period, which affected our timeline and budget. Speaking of budget, financial strain was a very real obstacle. Building a premium space from the ground up, while maintaining our personal lives and responsibilities, wasn’t easy.
But in every moment of difficulty, I was lucky to have the support of my husband, Minthira, and our close friends. Their encouragement, hands-on help, and belief in our dream helped us move forward — step by step — until The Grand Dara became a reality.

The Grand Dara Thai Massage is a boutique massage studio located in Pacific Beach, San Diego. We specialize in traditional Thai massage, deep tissue, and customized therapeutic techniques designed to restore both the body and the mind. Our mission is to elevate the Thai massage experience — not just as a treatment, but as a holistic healing journey.
What sets us apart is the care we put into every detail. From the thoughtfully designed interior, inspired by serene Thai aesthetics, to the premium level of hospitality and professionalism — everything is created to make our guests feel truly special.
The name “The Grand Dara” reflects both our location on Grand Avenue and the Thai word “Dara,” which means star. It represents our hope that each guest leaves feeling brighter, lighter, and more at peace.

How do you think about luck?
Luck has definitely played a role in my journey — both the good and the bad.
There were moments that felt like setbacks — like losing our previous businesses, dealing with delays, and facing financial challenges. At the time, those moments didn’t feel like “luck” at all. But looking back now, I realize that even the difficult times were part of the path that brought me to where I am today.
I also feel incredibly lucky to be surrounded by the right people. My husband, Minthira, has been my partner in every sense — supporting me emotionally, physically, and professionally. And we’ve had friends who believed in us and stepped in to help when we needed it most. That kind of support is something I never take for granted.
Through every challenge, I’ve always believed one thing: nothing stays forever — everything just passes through. Hard times come, but they also go. I remind myself not to give up, because I truly believe we can overcome anything. That mindset keeps me moving forward, no matter what.
Opening The Grand Dara Thai Massage feels like the result of both perseverance and good fortune. I believe that luck shows up when you’re prepared, open-hearted, and willing to keep going — even when things are uncertain. And in that sense, I feel very lucky.
