Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Bostrom.
Hi Sean, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began studying piano at age eight and quickly fell in love with both the discipline and expressive freedom it offers. That passion led me to earn a degree in Music Education and eventually spend the past six years teaching and performing in North Idaho, where I built a private studio and worked closely with students of all ages. Those years were incredibly formative—not just in developing my teaching and musicianship, but in understanding how powerful music can be in bringing people together and making a real impact in people’s lives.
Recently, I made the move to Oceanside, California to expand that vision and focus more intentionally on performing and growing my studio. In my performances, I blend high-level classical playing with humor and storytelling, creating concerts that are engaging, approachable, and memorable—what I like to call “88 Keys, 88 Laughs” – Inspired by the great Victor Borge. Alongside performing, I continue working with students and families, helping them build skill, confidence, and a genuine love for music. At the core of everything I do is a desire to connect with people and create experiences that uplift and inspire.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most musicians building something from the ground up, I’ve had to navigate a lot of uncertainty—especially when it comes to consistent income, finding the right performance opportunities, and getting in front of the right audiences. Early on, it was a constant balance between teaching enough to stay stable financially while still carving out time to practice, perform, and grow creatively. There were also moments where concerts didn’t sell as expected or opportunities fell through, which forces you to quickly adapt and stay resilient.
Moving from Idaho to Southern California brought a new set of challenges as well—starting over in a much larger, more competitive market, building a new network, and establishing credibility in a new community. But those challenges have also been the most valuable. They’ve pushed me to become more resourceful, more disciplined, and more intentional about the kind of experience I want to create through both my performances and my teaching.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Oceanside Piano, I specialize in two core areas: high-level piano instruction and live performance that blends classical music with humor and audience interaction. As a performer, I’ve developed a show that breaks the traditional “formal” concert mold—mixing virtuosic repertoire with storytelling, comedic timing, and moments that invite the audience into the experience. It’s designed to make classical music feel approachable, engaging, and genuinely fun, even for people who have never been to a piano concert before. On the teaching side, I work with students and families who want a more focused, high-quality experience, helping them build strong technique, effective practice habits, and real confidence at the instrument.
What I’m most proud of is the ability to create a meaningful connection with people through music—whether that’s a student having a breakthrough moment or an audience walking away from a performance feeling energized and inspired. I think what sets me apart is that combination of technical depth and personality. I take the craft seriously, but I don’t take myself too seriously, and that balance allows me to reach people in a way that feels both professional and personal.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The most important quality behind my success has been persistence—paired with a willingness to adapt. Building a career in music requires showing up consistently, even when results aren’t immediate, and continuing to refine both the artistic and business sides of what I do. There have been plenty of moments where things didn’t go as planned, but instead of stepping back, I’ve learned to adjust quickly, improve the approach, and keep moving forward.
At the same time, I’ve stayed focused on creating real value for people—whether that’s delivering a memorable performance or helping a student make meaningful progress. That combination of consistency, adaptability, and a genuine commitment to serving others has been the foundation for everything I’ve built so far.
