Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Battaglia.
Dana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I worked in the spa industry immediately after graduating with my cosmetology license, however, the recession began shortly thereafter and the beauty industry was hit hard. I decided to work a full-time desk job to make ends meet but after leaving the wellness field for 8 months I realized that I missed skincare. I was getting asked quite often by friends and family if I could provide waxing and facials for them so I decided to start offering services out of my home on nights and weekends.
Several months later I came across the perfect commercial space around the corner from my home in Golden Hill and felt it was fate. I filed for a business license and moved in right away – this is when Girl on the Go was born! Because I continued to work my day job, I offered skincare services and waxing during the evening and on the weekends only. I quickly realized this was an untapped market of working professionals, busy parents, and military personnel that wanted to treat themselves but had a difficult time making appointments during traditional spa hours.
This is why after expanding the spa and hiring additional therapists, I took a twist on “day spa” and coined the term “night spa”. Over the years we’ve gone through an expansion, a remodel and continued to add new services while extending our hours to 9a-10p on weekdays and 9a-6p on weekends. Girl on the Go! Night Spa is making a mark in San Diego and we’re excited for what the future may hold!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wish I could say that it has been a smooth road but with any business, there are always up and downs. The first person who ever called to make an appointment ended up no-showing me. It was very disappointing but it taught me a lot about the industry very early on.
One of the biggest struggles I’ve had was making the decision to revamp our menu and do a complete renovation of the spa a year and a half ago. The spa was doing great and we have so many amazing clients but my dream has always been to focus on health and wellness.
I had to steer my focus toward my goals and make some huge changes that would forever change the direction of Girl on the Go. When I look back on my decision today though, I am absolutely certain it was the right one to make.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Girl on the Go! Night Spa is a spa that offers services seven days a week but specializes in evening hours for people who are unable to receive spa treatments during traditional daytime spa hours. We offer facials, massage, waxing, make-up application, spray tanning, body treatments, and body wraps. GOTG is known for our facials because we offer customized treatments that target all skin types.
We use our education and intuition to provide the best facials to anyone looking to increase the quality of their skin. We set ourselves apart from our competition by using the time in the treatment room to inform our clients of what we see and feel, and help them create a regimen that is specific to each client’s needs and lifestyle. We are there for our clients every step of the way!
What were you like growing up?
My friends, family, and husband would all describe me as a fearless goofball. As a child, I loved adventure and always had my hands in an activity. When I started GOTG, it was no surprise to them because I always had an entrepreneurial spirit growing up.
I loved selling Girl Scout Cookies or setting up a table to sell lemonade and baked goods on the neighborhood corner. I enjoyed swimming and was a member of the swim team, and loved going to Rawhide Ranch summer camp.
