Meet Kait Schulhof of A Clean Bee in North County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kait Schulhof.

Kait, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for cleaning and organizing began at a very young age (I used to clean my friends’ rooms for fun during play dates as a kid). My productivity and mood are strongly influenced by my surroundings so maintaining a clean and organized space has always been important to me.

Then in 2013, I listened to a podcast interview of Bea Johnson of Zero Waste Home. She teaches about how families can eliminate unnecessary waste from their homes and minimize their negative environmental impact. She preaches the 5 R’s: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Re-purpose, Recycle, in that order.

This concept truly resonated with me because refusing new and reducing existing items in our homes are the two biggest keys to organizational success. Plus owning less “stuff” means cleaning less “stuff” – meaning less time spent on maintaining clutter and more time spent participating in activities that bring life satisfaction. Plus, if living within these guidelines also has a positive environmental impact then all the better.

My goal is to teach others easy ways to simplify their homes and create a healthy space for their families to live and enjoy.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This lifestyle has come with quite a bit of trial and error. I have experimented with DIY non-toxic cleaning alternatives, researched and discovered local shops that offer package-free consumable products, tested organizational systems that work for me AND my husband (hint: if you want your family members or roommates to follow a system, labels are your best friend!) and now I’m trying my hand at growing my own organic herbs and veggies.

Transitioning to a fully clean lifestyle takes time and practice, one of many reasons I am passionate about sharing my best successes with others.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about A Clean Bee – what should we know?
My husband and I manage a website called A Clean Bee where we share ways to live a cleaner life, naturally. We focus primarily on ways to clean a home with natural or homemade cleaning products, how to minimize the items in your home and organize what necessities remain, and feature sustainable alternatives for household products.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe that becoming a mother has made me 100 times more motivated to succeed in just about every category of my life. My son is now 11 months old and I am very passionate about setting a positive example for him in how I love and support my husband, how I show up for and partner with friends and colleagues, and in how I try my best to do what’s right for our environment.
