Meet Ryan Anthony of Barely See The Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Anthony.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ryan. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I started by making beats and engineering for the homies. I then started rapping myself. It took me a while to find my sound/lane, but when I did, I didn’t look back. Then I started making clothes that resembled the music. I have built a prominent San Diego streetwear clothing brand out of the trunk of my car. I turned it into a delivery service and I personally delivery any merch that people want to purchase.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Hell Naw. Being broke majority of the time, being on government assistance in order to eat something decent, getting eviction notices, not getting any sleep because I had to work 9 to 5 to have a little money then working all night till four or five in the morning to make my dreams a reality, I wouldn’t call it a smooth ride. But I enjoyed every step of the way. Hell, I’m still struggling, but it’s the norm for me now, so I know how to make it comfortable.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Barely See The Beach story. Tell us more about the business.
The phrase BARELY SEE THE BEACH is a representation of the inner cities of San Diego.

In the meaning of the phrase Barely See The Beach, “THE BEACH” represents paradise: the calm feeling of your feet sinking into the sand of the shore, as the waves sway back and forth against them, while the salty winds of the ocean breeze surrounds you and put you at peace.

Although we live within driving distance of the beach, sometimes PARADISE feels unreachable. Gangs, drug use, low incomes, over policing & lack of funding within our schools and community centers are some of the contributing factors to why we Barely See The Beach. These things do not impact ALL of San Diego, but to many, it is very much a reality.

When you think San Diego, you mainly think about the beautiful beaches and the wealthy billion dollar communities, thus making the rest of us feel unrepresented.  Barely See The Beach is dedicated to shedding light on our inner cities issues and the amazing times that we have during our struggles.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t play into luck. We all have to play the hand that we were dealt: good or bad.
