Thanks for sharing your story with us Yuseff. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Cutwater Spirits began as a part of Ballast Point Brewing. Back in 2007, we decided to continue our path of exploration and begin distilling. We quickly fell in love it and some experimenting and awards later, we found ourselves expanding with the purchase of our first custom built Vendome still. In 2015, the spirits were officially separated from the brewery when Ballast Point sold to Constellation Brands and the original founders, rebranded as Cutwater Spirits in the Miramar neighborhood of San Diego. Whiskey, Vodka, Gin, Rum, Liqueur, mixers, canned cocktails and beyond. Armed with some heavy experience, hard earned awards and boundless energy, we’re charging ahead to carve out our place in the global spirits industry. We invite all who share our passion to join us on the journey. Our new home is a 50,000 square foot world class production facility in San Diego where our distillers can tap into their curiosity and creativity, build on tradition, all the while with their minds wide open to the unconventional.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Even with the history of working in the beer industry, we are still a startup – a small but growing company in the big world of distilling. One of the largest but most rewarding challenges we have had, has been our adventure with canned cocktails. While there are other canned products on the market, they are largely sugary malt based beverages that are very different from the spirit based products we make. Helping to grow a new category can be difficult, but it’s exciting to see someone try our cocktails and be blown away by the quality you can get in a can.
Cutwater Spirits – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At Cutwater we make high quality award winning products ranging from individual spirits such as vodka, gin, whiskey, herbal liquor, rum, non-alcoholic mixers, and canned cocktails. That diversity of products sets us apart from others in the industry and allows us to prioritize research and development, creative thinking and experimentation to create products we love and hope others do to.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It’s always great seeing experimental creations make in our distillery come to fruition. We are then able to bring those very small batch R&D creations to our tasting room, and the hope is to eventually bring it out as a product on the market. For example, Bali Hai Rum started as a product just for our bar and restaurant, and it became so popular we recently launched it in California and beyond.
